Hardy Apricot (prunus armeniaca)
Apricots are strong, deep rooted trees. They flower very early making them a challenge in places with late spring frosts. We get to see a nice crop of apricots every few years. When they do set fruit, it is amazing. The fruits are small and extremely flavorful. They are excellent dried and made into preserves and desserts.
The trees are cold hardy here in zone 5 for us, having survived temperatures as low as -20f.
Our trees are grown from seed. Like most stone fruits, apricots come about 90% true from seed. Seedling apricots have the advantage of not having a graft union. They also add to the genetic diversity of fruit trees.
