Redbud (cercis canadensis)

Highly attractive native trees with stunning red flowers. Redbuds are fast growing and fix nitrogen; they are in the pea family (Fabaceae). The flowers are edible and are one of the best sources of vitamin C in the eastern woodlands. They are sweet tasting, similar to peas, and are excellent eaten raw or pickled. Redbuds also have a long history of use as a medicinal plant, with an infusion of the inner bark traditionally being used to treat nausea, diarrhea, and chest complaints.
